#7 Irish coffee

As a bartender, I've crafted countless Irish coffees, each one as warm and inviting as the next. Learn the art of making the perfect Irish coffee, whether you're hosting a brunch or winding down the evening.

Making an Irish coffee is a simple and delightful process. Here's a classic recipe for you:

Ingredients:

  1. 1 cup of hot brewed coffee

  2. 1 shot of Irish whiskey (about 1.5 ounces)

  3. 1 to 2 teaspoons of brown sugar (adjust to taste)

  4. Freshly whipped cream

Instructions:

  1. Brew the Coffee: Brew a strong cup of coffee. You can use your preferred method, such as a drip coffee maker, French press, or espresso machine.

  2. Warm the Glass: To keep your Irish coffee warm, preheat your glass by filling it with hot water. Let it sit for a minute, then discard the water.

  3. Add Irish Whiskey and Sugar: Pour a shot (about 1.5 ounces) of Irish whiskey into the warmed glass. Add brown sugar to taste, usually around 1 to 2 teaspoons. Stir well until the sugar is dissolved.

  4. Pour in the Coffee: Pour the hot brewed coffee into the glass, stirring gently to combine it with the whiskey and sugar.

  5. Top with Whipped Cream: Carefully float freshly whipped cream on top of the coffee by pouring it over the back of a spoon. The cream should sit on the surface of the coffee without sinking. You can whip the cream lightly; it should not be too stiff.

  6. Serve and Enjoy: Serve the Irish coffee hot and enjoy it while the cream is still floating on top. Sip the coffee through the creamy layer for the best flavor.

Feel free to adjust the ratios of whiskey, sugar, and cream to suit your personal taste preferences. Some people also like to garnish with a sprinkle of nutmeg or cocoa on top of the cream. You can also check out this Delish version which is, well, delish.

#13 Pickle Back

A pickleback shot is a popular and simple whiskey shot that is typically served with a pickle juice chaser. The combination of the strong, slightly sweet flavor of the whiskey with the tangy and briny taste of pickle juice creates a unique and enjoyable experience. Here's how you can make a pickleback shot:

Ingredients:

  1. 1 shot of your favorite Irish whiskey

  2. 1 shot of pickle juice (usually dill pickle juice)

Instructions:

  1. Pour a shot of whiskey into a shot glass.

  2. Pour a shot of pickle juice into a separate shot glass.

  3. Take the whiskey shot first, sipping and savoring the flavor.

  4. Immediately follow the whiskey shot with the pickle juice chaser. The pickle juice helps to neutralize the burn of the whiskey and provides a refreshing contrast.

Some variations may include using different types of pickles or pickle brine, so feel free to experiment with flavors that you enjoy. The pickleback shot has gained popularity as a fun and unique way to enjoy whiskey, and it's often served in bars and enjoyed by those looking for a tasty and unconventional combination.
