Gift Guide - Naked Malt Whisky

Naked Malt scotch blended whisky wrapped up for gifting in green reindeer wrapping paper

Giving season is upon us, its 4 days before Christmas and if you’re anything like me then there’s still quite a lot of last minute shopping that needs to be done. If you have an appreciator of fine booze in your life then Naked Malt is a brand I’d recommend. It’s a great tasting Scotch which can be enjoyed mixed or straight. And at only £26 (UK) it makes the perfect gift.

And not just for Christmas either. This would make a great gift for Birthdays, Anniversaries, Fathers day and Mothers day (yes, women also enjoy Whisky, its not the 1950s anymore)

What makes Naked Malt different

At Naked Malt they do things a little different. They don’t confine themselves to convention and as a result, you get a unique product. Naked Malt is a blend of some of the worlds finest whiskies which are then extra matured for 6-months in first fill Oloroso sherry casks.

These casks are where the name “naked” comes from. Naked Malt uses sherry casks that have never seen an ounce of whisky, so they are referred to as “naked casks” hence, Naked Malt. Makes sense now, right?

Doing this creates a unique flavour. So much of the character of a whisky is created in these casks a distinctive and intense flavour. Rich with smooth and fruity notes it stands out from other Scotch.

You can find out more about the process of Naked Malt and what makes it unique on their official website found here.

How to enjoy Naked Malt

Naked Malt can be enjoyed in a number of serves. The 3 basic recommendations would be straight up or on the rocks. If you’re not one for drinking straight whisky then try it topped with soda to still enjoy Naked Malts full uncompromised flavour. Finally, there is the classic whisky sour serve which works perfect with Naked Malt. For this, I’d recommend a 4:2:1 ratio of Naked Malt, lemon juice and sugar syrup. That being 50ml Naked Malt, 25ml Lemon juice and 12.5ml Sugar Syrup.

With just those 3 serves, the possibilities for creativity become endless. Instead of topped with soda you can try different flavoured bubbly mixers, you can also substitute the sugar syrup in the whisky sour for any other sweetener, honey works great to bring out those fruity floral notes, maple syrup works wonders for a richness.

Naked Malt themselves have plenty of variations on Whisky sours that you can try out. You can find them here.

Personally, I replaced the sugar syrup with cinnamon to create more of a seasonal serve on the classic. Here’s my Naked Malt serve…
