Thanks very much, now on with the cocktail in question.

Matcha Cocktails

A matcha cocktail is something I’ve been wanting to play around with for a long time now. Matcha as in ingredient is very intriguing, not only is it so authentically vibrant but its healthy, and more than that it's trending. Anytime a health ingredient is trending you just know of the back it's going to be an interesting one. Flash back to the days of turmeric and golden milk.

matcha

It's easy to see why Matcha is indeed a powerhouse of health. As well as giving you more of a healthier caffeine boost it also promotes healthier cholesterol levels, strengthens your bones, and is loaded with antioxidants.

So it's safe to say I really met my matcha with this one… ba dum tss

P.s if you’re looking to buy matcha powder online here’s the one I recommend if you’re UK based, and here’s the on I recommend if you’re USA based.

On the subject of matcha cocktails

Whilst on the subject of matcha cocktails it's worth noting that this was really fun to make. These bright, vibrant ingredients are always a blast to mess around with. A big turn off for healthy cocktails does tend to be the unappealing colour but personal I find the vibrant green colour a massive plus.

Just looking at it screams healthy. Usually when people think healthy they think dry and bland so its good practise to make sure you get that sweetness in. Using that 1tsp of honey in this recipe is just enough to give it an unexpected sweet lift.

Matcha Cocktail Ingredients

  • 1 tsp Matcha powder

  • 20ml Lemon juice

  • 1 tsp Honey

  • 50ml Gin

  • 3 Dashes of celery bitters

A note one celery bitters

Celery bitters, although there is but 3 drops in the cocktail. Those 3 drops make a big difference. It adds that much sought after complexity. As for what celery bitters to use I’ve decided to leave out a brand just as I did with the gin. As its completely up to you.

You can choose to make your own with some vodka celery infusions or pick some up online. Fee brothers have a classic celery bitters which is nice and widely available, as does The bitter truth. If possible though, for a little extra cash you can pick up Bittermans celery shrub which is on a whole nother level.

A note on gin

Once again I’ve left both branding and style of this because its completely up to you. Gin is a heavy part of this cocktail, so whichever gin you decide to use you’re going to taste in the end cocktail. So it’s best to make sure you personally like the gin.

Obviously, some products tend to work better with matcha which I will suggest. However, at the end of the day its completely up to you.

Two gin recommendations

Roku

Roku is a Japanese gin that celebrates 6 seasons of Japan with 6 Japanese botanicals (roku means 6 in Japanese) Those botanicals include sencha and gyokuro tea along with yuzu and sansho pepper. All pair great with matcha.

You can learn more and buy Roku here.

Hendricks

The classic green gin cocktail gin. Hendricks has a very floral cucumber and rose base which helps define the celery notes in this cocktail

If you want more of an authentic matcha pairing go for the Roku. If you want to focus more on the “green” aspect go for the Hendricks.

Or as I said, go for whatever gin you like the taste of the most.

That being said, you can learn more and buy Hendricks here if you want.

Functional matcha riff on a bees knees

You may be thinking that this cocktail has a somewhat similarity about it. That’s because it's my functional riff on a bee's knees. A bees knees is one of my favourite gin cocktails and an absolutely delicious sipper. In this case I’ve swapped out the orange flavour for matcha and added a dash of celery bitters.
