What are wellness shots?

Wellness shots are non-alcoholic concentrated ingredients that have functional and wellness properties. They range vastly from shots benefiting skin care, to weight loss shots, to natural caffeine and energy boosting shots and anything else you can think of.

What we are basically doing is taking an ingredient which is highly beneficial in one way or another. And concentrating that so we can have it in one knock back of a shot.

You can also combine beneficial ingredients in order to create one powerhouse shot. Think Tequila shooters but with health benefits…

Do wellness shots work?

They do work yes, think about it, you are taking nutritional ingredients and shooting it in one go. Some work better than others of course, its about finding the right balance of what you want and what ingredients you choose. Then how you decide to utilize those ingredients in order to reap the benefits. 

The process of taking wellness shots is very similar to health supplements, however this way is a natural way.

But of course, it only works in balance with everything else you do. Having a weight loss shot every morning will not make you lose weight if you’re eating a surplus of food. A gut friendly ginger shot will not cure a hangover in an instant if you spent the entire night before drinking like there was no tomorrow.

The problem with shop bought wellness shots.

The one problem that sticks out when it comes to shop bought wellness shots is the price of them. A standard 50ml bottle costs upwards of £5 which is just ridiculous. It does make some sense though, when you think about it.

These are very concentrated flavours. The producers need to make a profit and the only way to do that when you’re cramming so much into such a little bottle is to up the price.

However, producers are also paying for bottling, labels, and shipping as well as all the other costs involved in running a company. We don’t have that cost. Which brings me to my next point…

Why DIY homemade wellness shots are better then shop bought.

Because we don’t have all these additional costs. It means we can create these shots for much cheaper. In fact, a wellness ginger and turmeric shot that may cost you £3 in a shop for 50ml will cost you about £3 for 500ml at home. They are big savings. Big savings indeed.

The second stand out reason DIY wellness shots are better homemade is because we have more control over the flavour and benefits. We know what we want and what we like, so we can adjust recipes however we like, add more of one ingredient and less of another, add extra ingredients or take some away that we don’t need. We have full control over the process. 

Not to mention it's easy to do.

No Juicer Required

My favourite thing about these specific health shot recipes is that there’s no juicing required.

A juicer is a great piece of tech to have in your kitchen but most of us don’t have one and buying one just for wellness shots alone is a bit of an investment. A blender on the other hand is something most of us have and if you don’t have a blender, purchasing a good one will come in handy a lot.

Not just for shots, but smoothies, soups, purees, pasta sauces, the list goes on and on. So the only gadget you need to get started on all these recipes is a blender.

Blending wellness shots

Having a blender is a big help when it comes to homemade wellness shots. It opens the possibilities for much more powerful concentrates and the ability to use more ingredients. For this, you will need a blender that's good for drink blending.

5 Homemade wellness shot recipes

Now all the basics are out the way, you have a good blender and you know what you want. Its time to get creative. Here are 5 of my wellness shot recipes with the benefits and functions.

#1 Lemon and Ginger ACV wellness shot recipe

Good for: Weight loss

Ingredients

  • 100ml Fresh Lemon Juice

  • 100ml Ginger juice

  • 100ml Apple Cider Vinegar

Method

  1. Make the ginger juice, then funnel all the ingredients into a bottle and refrigerate.

  2. With the high amount of apple cider vinegar in the mix your ACV shot should last well up to 10 days.

How to make ginger juice

  • Blend equal parts ginger by weight and water. Once blended strain into a bottle and refrigerate.

  • For 100ml you will need around 70ml of water blended with 70grams of ginger

Uses and benefits

This shot works wonders as an immune boosting morning pick me up. Simply pour yourself out a 50ml glass in the morning and shoot it back. The ACV hit alone will wake you up, but just wait till it starts making its way around your body reaping the effects of fresh ginger, ACV and lemon.

Benefits include weight loss, glowing skin, hair and fingernails and an almost instant boost of energy. It also works great to combat bloating.

#2 Pineapple, Ginger and Turmeric wellness shot recipe

Good for: Detoxifying and immunity

  • 100ml Pineapple juice

  • 100grams Ginger Root

  • 100grams Turmeric Root

  • 100ml Water

Method

  1. Add everything to a blender and blend on full power till you get a smooth consistency

  2. Fine strain into a bottle and refrigerate. Use within a week.

Uses and benefits

Turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, muscles and connective tissue due to the active compound in turmeric curcumin. That, coupled with ginger root helps create a stomach settling, detoxifying and immunity boosting powerhouse of a wellness shot.

Wellness shots aren’t known for their great flavour. But the pineapple juice in this really adds to creating a nice flavour profile to this shot as well as adding a nice little sugar hit to keep us energized.

#3 Beetroot, Ginger and lemon wellness shot recipe

Good for: Stamina and blood flow

Beetroot, Lemon and ginger wellness shot recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 Medium sized beetroot peeled & cut into small pieces

  • 50 grams ginger root 

  • 50ml Fresh lemon juice

Method

  1. Peel your ginger then cut it into small chunks

  2. Add you ginger, lemon juice and beetroot to a blender with a splash of water

  3. Blend till you get a smooth consistency and strain into a bottle

  4. Top tip: beetroot stains like crazy so be prepared for red fingers, hands and kitchen countertops.

Uses and benefits

Beetroot, the sweet and earthy bulbous root vegetable that people either love or hate. Beetroot is quickly making a name for itself in the wellness community, especially when it comes to mindful drinking due to its powerhouse health benefits and flavour profile.

There have been studies to show that drinking beet juice increases plasma nitrate levels which boost physical performance and helps increase our stamina. It also works great for keeping our blood pressure low. 

If this wasn’t enough, beetroot has also shown to protect the liver, reduce inflammation and has a great nutritional profile, filled with vitamins, calcium, iron, magnesium and zinc.

Coupling this powerhouse vegetable up with lemon and ginger adds extra benefits as well as flavour. Because of the athletic performance increasing properties this shot works great first thing in the morning or 30 minutes before working out.

#4 Goji berry, Coconut and Green tea wellness shot recipe

Good for: Energy and weight loss

Ingredients

  • 200grams Dried Goji berries

  • 200ml Green tea

  • 100ml Coconut water

Method

  1. Steep 2 green tea bags in 200ml of boiling water for 5 minutes

  2. Strain your tea into a blender along with the coconut water and dried goji berries

  3. Blend till smooth, strain into a bottle and refrigerate

Uses and benefits

This tropical wellness shot isn’t just here because of its tasty flavour. This shot is packed with wellness benefits. For those of you who remember, There was once a time when Goji berries were all the range in the wellness community and for good reasons.

Goji berries promote good health in everything from eyes, skin, and the immune system. These tasty little berries also help control and stabilize sugar in the blood.

Once you pair that with the energizing, antioxidant, and weight loss benefits of green tea. Then for good measure add the hydration benefits of coconut water. What we have is a powerhouse weight loss and energy shot that will keep our skin, eyes, fingernails and hair looking wonderful.

This works great for before/after exercising and when you’re having a bad skin week and need a good detoxing boost. It also works wonders as a hangover cure.

#5 Matcha, Turmeric, Lemon and Coconut water wellness shot recipe

Good for: Focus

Ingredients

  • ½ tsp Matcha powder

  • ½ tsp Turmeric powder

  • 25ml Fresh Lemon juice

  • 100ml Coconut water

Method

  1. Mix everything together in a jug and whisk till completely combined

  2. Pour into a bottle and refrigerate

  3. Before you serve it’s wise to give the bottle a shake as the turmeric and matcha may have sunk to the bottom

For this wellness shot, we are combining two powerhouse wellness communities that people just cannot get enough of; Matcha and Turmeric.
