How to make a virgin bloody Mary that isn’t just taking the booze out.

Non alcoholic Bloody Maria photo

If you’re a Bloody Mary fan then you will be fully in agreement that wherever you go, a Virgin Bloody Mary is just the same recipe as an alcoholic Bloody Mary but without the vodka.

The Issue With Virgin Bloody Mary’s

It’s nice and all, don’t get me wrong. But what I’m suggesting is a way to up the flavour of your virgin Mary. A way where you can vastly improve the flavour.

Instead of taking the vodka out to create a ‘Virgin Bloody Mary’ which in my opinion is closer to tomato soup then it is a Bloody Mary, I suggest swapping the vodka with non-alcoholic tequila to create a ‘Virgin Bloody Maria’ - a Bloody Maria is a Bloody Mary with Tequila instead of Vodka.

This small change will make the absolute best Virgin Bloody Mary you’ve ever had.

Garnishing your Virgin Bloody Mary

Much like a regular Bloody Mary, you can go as crazy as you like with the garnish for our non alcoholic version. Celery is a classic as is a half salt, half chili flake rim.

For the rim, just pour out equal parts salt and chilli flakes on a plate, rub the rim of your glass with a lemon wedge, then dip the glass in the mixture.

I also garnish my non-alcoholic Virgin Bloody Mary with olives and jalapenos which I recommend. A Bloody Mary (alcoholic or not) should always come with a snack worth of garnishing.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Prepare your glass by rubbing a lime around the rim, then dipping the rim into a plate of equal parts flaked salt and dried chili flakes.
  2. Add all your ingredients to a cocktail shaker with ice and ‘roll’ to combine (a very light shake)
  3. Strain your virgin Bloody Maria over ice in your salt and chili rimmed glass.
  4. Garnish with celery or whatever takes your fancy, in the above photo I went with celery leaves, black olives, sundried tomato’s and jalapenos.

Notes

Because of the use of Lyre's agave, this is actually closer to a Virgin Bloody Maria then it is Bloody Mary. You can swap out the Lyre's agave for any other clear non alcoholic spirit. A non alcoholic gin would be closer to a Red Snapper.
