Review - Zwilling 7-piece Self-sharpening Knife Block Set

Thinking of buying a Zwilling 7-piece Self-sharpening Knife Block Set and wondering if it's worth the money? Here's my genuine review before buying.

So if you haven't guessed by the fact I run this humble food and drink blog. Knives are a big behind the scenes part of my day to day life.

Usually, I keep all that stuff behind the camera, but I’m recently trying a new thing where I review and recommend the equipment I actually use.

When other food bloggers share what’s in their kitchen, I love it, and when I’ve done deep dives into whats in celebrity kitchens like my review on the products used in Gordon Ramsays personal kitchen, Jamie Olivers personal kitchen and whats in the Great British Bake Off kitchens, you all seem to enjoy it.

So why not share a little slice of my kitchen.

And seems as I recently came into ownership of some Zwilling knives with a self sharpening block. I thought what better time than now!

What are Zwilling knives?

You are probably reading this post for one of two reasons. Either you are thinking about buying a zwilling knife set and are wanting to find a real review, or you’re wanting to buy any knife set, stumbled across this post, and now you want to know what the hell zwilling knives are.

Allow me to elaborate, Zwilling knives are knives that have blades constructed from high-carbon stainless steel. They are also ice-hardened for sharpness and stain resistance.

This particular set is forged from special stainless steel with robust handles and corrosion resistant.

That being said, Good knives don’t come cheap. This set I have, the one I’m reviewing can be found cheapest on Amazon - Just make sure you get them from the official Zwilling listing.

The official listings at the cheapest price for this exact set is here;

Are Zwilling knives good

I can indeed confirm they are good. In fact they are better than good. They are great!

I mean they sure sell themselves well on their listing, but I wont get into the ins and outs of all that. You can check out what they have to say about their knives by checking out those listings above, I’m not here to sell you on specs.

I don’t think you really care, if I’m right, you just want a real human review and that's what you are going to get. Because at the end of the day, they can be made with whatever fancy techniques they want, the question is are they good?

But first, the knives in question…

Zwilling 7-piece Self-sharpening Knife Block Set

In this set you get 5 knives and a pair of scissors, the knives include a meat, bread and chef's knife as well as a utility (general purpose) and garnishing knife.

All nicely presented in your kitchen with a lovely dark brown self-sharpening block which keeps your knives from ever blunting.

Now you know what they are and what to expect, let's get onto the main point of this post. What did I really think about this knife set.

Line up of Zwilling knives which come with the set.

Photo’d above: A lovely line up of the knives next to some food that you could cut taken from amazon. Why the smaller serrated knife is showcasing it’s cutting ability on vine tomatoes I do not know. I don’t think I’d ever use that to cut a tomato…

Review

I should start by stating I am not a professional chef. I do however cook a hell of a lot. Both for this blog and to, well, you know, live. I like food.

Up until last Christmas I would only use knives bought at your regular kitchen utility shops. Homebase, Wilko, even the occasional Asda. Then at Christmas me and my partner were gifted this zwilling knife set.

That’s the thing about having a food website, everyone just buys you kitchen gadgets for Christmas. Not going to lie, I do love it, but 90% is just stuff that gets shoved in the back of a cupboard never to see daylight.

My first thought was “it seems expensive, I mean how good could they be? but whatever, I didn't pay”

What a foolish thought. Not to be over dramatic but I don't understand how I lived without these knives. They cut everything so easily.

Prepping my food has become an absolute breeze. No more have I had to struggle to get a knife through a butternut squash, no more have I tore apart bread just trying to cut it in half and no more have I sweated like a pig trying to finely chop a single clove of garlic.

These knives have quickly become the pride and joy of my Kitchen. It’s been over a year of excessive daily use and still they are as sharp as the day I got them.

So if you’re thinking about putting in an order for some Zwilling knives, I highly recommend doing so. It's a decision you will not regret, I can promise you that.

And as for which to get. There's no better deal then these Amazon UK 7 piece sets WITH the self sharpening block.  Which for Americans, would be this one.

It’s by the same company but cheaper then on there official website. Almost £100 cheaper in fact. And yet it comes from the same warehouse. So yeah, highly recommend getting that set if you’re after a good deal.

These knives work for you, you don’t work for the knives. They do all the chopping, you simply and flaccidly lift your hand up and down. I cut through a pumpkin like it was butter the other day.

And the small knife works wonder for my bartending, cutting all those small peels into lovely neat shapes. Not to mention the multi use extra sharp scissors.

UPDATE:

Little update how sharp these knives really are… The other day my partner was washing them up in a sink full of bubbles, not thinking she tried cleaning the blade with a sponge.

Needless to say you can imagine what happened next. The blade went right through the sponge and right through my partners finger. We spent that Sunday evening in A&E so she could get her finger put back together.

I’m telling you this story for two reasons, firstly as proof of just how sharp these knives are and just how well the self sharpening block works. Secondly, don’t try to clean professional knife blades by running a sponge over them in a sink full of bubbles…

Is it worth the money?

One thing you have probably already noticed and one reason you are probably reading this first before jumping the gun is because your main concern is with the price.

There is no denying it, these knives are more expensive then your regular supermarket set. But the price is definitely worth it. Unlike most knives that blunt after 5 uses, these knives will stay sharp and work just as well as the day you got them.

It’s an investment for sure, but if you’re cooking everyday it will definitely pay of. Just think, you could earn that money back by investing in new business ventures with all the free time you have after taking 30 seconds to chop enough veggies and meat to fill a small bath.

Once you add the fact that getting them here will save you almost £100 compared to if you got them on the official UK website, then id say yes. Definitely worth the money.

Like I said, I use knives a lot. I’m a foodie so I’m always cooking fresh, which means daily chopping, and my work involves daily chopping, that’s double daily chopping. I’ve now had these knives over a year and they are still sharp.

Can you image? For my favourite knife (the chefs knife) that’s had way over 600 uses and its still sharp.

Every time I put it back in the block and take it out, it self sharpens. They are the only knives I will use in my home kitchen. Period.

A note on cleaning

One thing I will like to note is that I see a lot of people asking if these are dishwasher friendly. You can indeed put these in the dishwasher however they recommend hand cleaning.

I choose to hand clean just because it's simple and it makes me feel chefy cleaning my flush knives.

(Just don’t make the same mistake as my partner did)

What else is in my Kitchen?

Now I did mention my kitchen is full of gadgets shoved in the back of cupboards. If you want to know what else a food and drink blogger actually swears by and uses daily, check out my other kitchen gadgets I’ve reviewed;
