How to make the best ever tasting Cherry Bakewell cocktail easily at home - Tastes so good that the Cosy Club will be begging for the recipe!

A couple of year’s ago I worked with a company called Cottages and Castle to create a range of cocktails inspired by iconic British Desserts. During that partnership, I created this Cherry Bakewell cocktail which I’m now, sharing with you lucky sods.

What is a Cherry Bakewell

A Cherry Bakewell is a traditional British pastry that is both visually appealing and delectably delicious. A true classic among baked goods, the Cherry Bakewell has gained popularity not only in the United Kingdom but also worldwide.

At its core, a Cherry Bakewell consists of a light and buttery almond-flavoured pastry shell, often made with a combination of flour, butter, sugar, and ground almonds. This shell provides the foundation for the various layers that make up this delightful pastry. Those layers being; tangy cherry jam, almond frangipane filling, and finally it’s signature finishing touch: a delicate layer of white icing drizzled across the top and a glacé cherry.

Where do Cherry Bakewells come from

Cherry Bakewells come from the town of Bakewell in Derbyshire, England, UK, where it was first created.

I have a love hate relationship with Cherry Bakewells. One of my first jobs was working in a cake factory that made bakewell tarts. As much like Willy Wonka as that sounds, it really was not. Instead of singing and dancing oompa loompas, we had a bunch of chavs who had dropped out of collage wearing hair nets and beard nets taking trays out the oven and putting them on a rack again and again and again. Which was exactly me.

If I was lucky I’d get the chance to do something more useful, like push dough into a machine.

That being said you can’t call yourself English and not absolutely adore the cherry bakewell!

I mean look at them, so simple yet so appetising.

Bakewell Tart

Sometimes you may hear both Bakewell Tart and Cherry Bakewell being used. Just for clarification. The difference is that cherry bakewells have the fondant and glacé cherry. Bakewell tarts do not.

In simpler terms - all cherry bakewells are actually bakewell tarts, but not all bakewell tarts are cherry bakewells.

Who invented Cherry Bakewells

As the story goes, the Invention of the cherry bakewell dates back to the 19th century when a woman named Mrs Greaves, who was the landlady of the White Horse Inn in Derbyshire, created the Bakewell pudding which eventually became the base for the bakewell tart.

Or so it does according to cummni bakes.

I did research this quite a bit and a lot of stories seem to lead to that one. But take it with a pinch of salt.

What are the flavors in a cherry Bakewell?

The flavours of a cherry bakewell tart at the most basic is almond and cherry.

As long as you have a nice balance of both those flavours, whatever you make, whether it be a bake or cocktail will taste somewhat similar to a cherry bakewell.

Especially if you tell people “this is going to taste like a cherry bakewell” it puts it in there mind, so when they’re eating it, they think “mmm, this does taste like a cherry bakewell”. That’s how you Darren Brown the science of flavour.

If you want to get deeper into that flavour you need some texture element like fondant, so cream works perfectly. You also need to consider secondary flavours. Cherry bakewells should have a slight biscuity flavour, that’ll be the shortcrust pastry. And of course, if you really want to get into the science of flavour. The more something looks like something, the more it tastes like something.

So basically, make it look like a cherry bakewell and you’ll be fine.

Ingredients for the cherry bakewell tart cocktail: amaretto, cream, cherry jam.

So what’s in a cherry bakewell cocktail? To keep this as similar tasting to an actually cherry bakewell as possible, we only need 3 ingredients (plus 1 for garnishing).

Firstly is amaretto. amaretto is an almond flavour liqueur and the best thing is that most amaretto is nut-free, which means you can enjoy this cocktail even if you have a nut allergy. But do double check your amaretto first.

Disaronno

The most popular amaretto liqueur by far is Disaronno, which is just a name brand amaretto.

It also is easy to get hold of. Most shops stock Disaronno and Disaronno goes perfect in almond flavoured drinks. The Disaronno in this cocktail instantly gives it a Cherry Bakewell flavour.

In-fact, if you were to ask me how to make a cherry bakewell cocktail, my short answer would be Disaronno.

As a side note, once you’ve tried this cocktail, try the French connection, and the Godfather. Both of them are 2 ingredient cocktails which you will likely now have the ingredients for or at least half of the ingredients for. And if you like this cocktail, you’ll like them.

Cream

Double cream is going to thicken up that liquid and give it a texture and creamy flavour similar to fondant in a cherry bakewell.

Cherry Jam

Finally we have the ingredient that literally goes into a cherry bakewell which we will literally put into our bakewell tart cocktail. The cherry jam.

People often ask about how to make a cherry bakewell cocktail with rum. This version is relatively sweet and low abv. If you want to make the cherry bakewell cocktail with rum, I’d half the amount of Disaronno you put in and swap the other half for dark rum. So swap the 70ml of Disaronno with 35ml and 35ml of dark rum.

If you want to make a cherry bakewell cocktail with brandy, do the same as above but instead of rum, swap it out for brandy. If you’re using cherry brandy, I’d swap cut down on the cherry jam. So keep the same amount of double cream and then do half a teaspoon of cherry jam, 35ml of disaronno and 35ml of cherry brandy.

A lot of people also ask about making a cherry bakewell cocktail with Chambord. Now, technically Chambord is a raspberry liqueur so it’s not quite right. However, it still has that creamy jammy sweet flavour, so it would work.

Remember, making cocktails should be an indulgent, it should be fun. So I won’t sit here and yell at you for not using cherry. If you want to use Chambord go for it. Just swap out the cherry jam for 25ml of Chambord and it’ll still taste delicious.

The cream really helps make this cocktail. That being said, if you don’t want to use cream, you can still make a real good cherry bakewell cocktail by swapping out the cream entirely. Although I’d recommend for the best possible cherry bakewell cocktail, you use cream. I use double cream for a nice thick texture, but feel free to use single cream.

What is a Bakewell fizz?

Keeping in the subject of substituions, another popular option for cherry bakewell tasting cocktails is the bakewell fizz. Which is a champagne or prosecco topped cherry bakewell tart drink.

My recipe for the perfect bakewell fizz is to use 10ml of cherry liqueur (or Chambord), 20ml of Diaronno and top with your favourite sparkling wine.

Although you don’t get the creaminess of this cocktail, it still has a very similar flavour to an actually bakewell tart. Especially if you use champagne which has a classic biscuit flavour similar to shortcrust pastry. You could even use cremant.

As for the Cherry bakewell shot (or shooter) you want to make it by filling a shot glass half way with Chambord, then topping with Disaronno. Finish with a cocktail cherry and shoot it back (hopefully not choking on the cherry).

How to make Cosy Club’s Cherry Bakewell cocktail?

I’m going to assume if you’re looking for a cocktail that tastes like Cherry Bakewells, then you’re British. In which case I’m going to assume you’ve heard about the cocktail bar and restaurant franchise ‘The Cosy Club’.

One of the best selling cocktails at the cosy club is a Cherry Bakewell cocktail. Chances are the reason you’re reading this now is because you’ve just had a cherry bakewell cocktail at the Cosy Club and now you want to know how to remake it at home. Afterall, from what I hear, the cherry bakewell cocktail at The Cosy Club is there best selling cocktail.

This is not there recipe. Sorry if that disappoints. However I did some digging and found out what’s in it and how to make it if that’s the recipe you want.

How to recreate the Cosy Club Cherry Bakewell Cocktail at home

I did some digging and found the official recipe, which wasn’t fully listed so I completed the recipe based on the jigger sizes. Here it is, the official Cosy Club cherry bakewell cocktail recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 37.5ml Amaretto

  • 12.5ml Mount Gay Rum

  • 25ml Sweetbird

  • 25ml Caramel Syrup

  • 125ml Cherry Juice

METHOD

  1. Add ice to glass.

  2. Add all ingredients in to a Boston tin.

  3. Shake hard (the harder you shake, the more foam you get).

  4. Single strain in to glass over ice.

  5. Garnish and enjoy!

Slug and Lettuce Cherry Bakewell Cocktail

From what I hear the Slug and Lettuce also has a cherry bakewell cocktail (I guess everyone does now) however, and I mean no offence to them, I’ll leave that one. Do let me know if you want it though and I’ll do some digging.

The Best Cherry Bakewell Cocktail Recipe

With all that said and done, forget about the Cosy Club cherry bakewell. Here’s how you make the Smartblend Cherry Bakewell Cocktail.

This delicious combination of almonds and jammy goodness tastes exactly like a Cherry Bakewell Tart in cocktail form. With Disaronno, jam and cream.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients apart from the cream to a cocktail shaker, stir to infuse the jam. If you have a thick jam, I'd recommend pouring about half a shot of hot water into your shaker with the jam, stirring to create a cherry jam syrup then adding the Disaronno. If your cocktail comes out short, you need to add more water.
  2. Ad ice and shake well.
  3. Fine strain out into a Nick and Nora or Martini glass. Slowly, over the back of a spoon, pour the double cream so you get a perfectly crisp white layer sitting on top.
  4. Garnish with a cocktail cherry.
