Non alcoholic Batanga cocktail photo

A lesser known yet super easy to make AND delicious tequila cocktail is the Batanga, a Tequila version of the much more well known rum cocktail - the Cuba Libre.

Basically, it’s tequila and coke…

Tequila and Coke

Rum loves have the Cuba Libre, Vodka lovers have the Black Russian, Tequila lovers? We have the Batanga. Lime, Tequila, and Coke.

Why is it called the Batanga

In Spanish, The word Batanga is slang for “thick in the middle”. As the story goes, this cocktail was created by a bartender named Don Javier Delgado. Who as you may of guessed, named the drink after a man who was, well, thick in the middle. Hence the name - Batanga.

Making a non alcoholic Batanga

Take out the Tequila and it’s a batanga mocktail. However, isn’t that just a coke?

Which makes a lot of sense, however it’s not that simple. By removing the Tequila you in essence remove everything about it that makes it the Batanga. The real flavour of the Batanga is not the coke, nor is it the Tequila, instead it’s the flavour you get when coke and tequila is mixed. Make sense?

So if you remove the tequila and don’t replace it with something that has that typical tequila flavour, what you’re left with is indeed, just a coke.

Luckily for us we can replace that flavour whilst making the batanga alcohol free by using Lyre’s Agave Reserva spirit, a non-alcoholic substitute for reposado tequila.
