Now I’m going to tell you and I’m going to tell you good and proper. The Cheeky Vimto may be associated with 2000s alcopop young drinkers and may be dead and gone at this point. But it deserves to be seen. And if it was good enough for Charlotte Church and Amy Winehouse, then the Cheeky Vimto is a cocktail that’s good enough for us. So let me, a humble Mancunian lad, teach you how to PROPERLY make a Cheeky Vimto cocktail.

What Is a Cheeky Vimto?

Definition: The Cheeky Vimto is a lively and flavorful cocktail that combines WKD with Ruby Port.

Taste Profile: a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors, with a deep, almost hypnotic purple hue. (basically it tastes like Vimto).

What is Vimto

Vimto is a popular fruit-flavored cordial that originated in the United Kingdom. It is known for its unique and distinctive taste, which is a blend of various fruits and spices. The original Vimto recipe includes a mix of grapes, raspberries, and blackcurrants, infused with a combination of herbs and spices. Additionally, Vimto is sweetened with sugar and often diluted with water to create a refreshing beverage.

Vimto was first created in 1908 by John Noel Nichols, a wholesaler of herbs, spices, and medicines. The original intent behind the formulation of Vimto was to provide a health tonic during a period when temperance movements were gaining traction, and there was a growing interest in non-alcoholic beverages.

Over the years, Vimto has become a versatile product, available not only as a cordial but also in various forms, including carbonated drinks, ready-to-drink bottles, and even as a flavor for ice lollies (popsicles).

Vimto has achieved international recognition and is enjoyed in many countries. The brand has expanded its product line to include different variants and seasonal releases, but the original Vimto remains a nostalgic and beloved choice for many who appreciate its unique taste.

Cheeky Vimto History

Named for its resemblance to Vimto, a brand of fruit juice-based soft drink, the Cheeky Vimto cocktail made its debut on the British scene in the early 2000s. However, it skyrocketed to fame in June 2005 when the Daily Mail newspaper highlighted it as the preferred drink of Welsh singer-songwriter Charlotte Church.

Amy Winehouse also allegedly loved this cocktail. Which makes it the perfect cocktail to drink when the Amy Winehouse bio pick Back to Black comes out.

So it’s routed in the early 2000s of Britain. Which I guess is why I love it, that’s when I started drinking. I remember the Cheeky Vimto being every student bars best seller.

Who Invented the Cheeky Vimto

Now, you might be wondering, who was the genius behind the Cheeky Vimto? Ain’t we all. The truth is, I can’t find 1 single reference for anyone creating this drink or anyone owning up to the creation. But believe me, I aim to find out who! So watch this space.

Ruby Port

Ruby port is a type of fortified wine that originates from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is one of the several styles of port wine, which is characterized by its sweet and fruity flavor profile. Ruby port is typically the most straightforward and least expensive type of port, known for its deep red color and vibrant, youthful fruitiness.

Blue WKD

Blue WKD, often stylized as WKD, is a popular and brightly colored alcoholic beverage. It falls into the category of alcopops or flavored alcoholic drinks. Blue WKD is known for its vibrant blue color and sweet, fruity raspberry flavor profile. It has gained popularity, particularly among younger consumers, due to its eye-catching appearance and easy-drinking characteristics.
